Background information

Why Bay Area Bears?:

We started Bay Area Bears in March of 2013 in Houston, Tx.. I've been asked numerous times, why Bay Area? Houston is such a large area, we had to come up with a name that told people what "side" of Houston we were on. Our practice fields were next to Galveston Bay so we came up with Bay Area Bears. We were a TRUE AA team. Majority of our players were new to the select level and over 80% have never had private lessons. When we started Spring 2013, they only had a power rating of 202. Fall of 2013, we had a power rating of 577. We were truly Bay Area Bears. We had started off rough but finished strong. We truly developed players. Most of the players on that team went on to play High School and some in College.

My Background:

I grew up in King/Tobaccoville area and so glad to be back home! I started playing ball right here at King Recreation Acres! A few of you may remember me from Chestnut Grove before we moved. Some of you may know me from teaching you or your family swimming lessons, lifeguard training or Scuba in this area as Dolphin Aquatics. I graduated from Forbush High School before attending UNC-Charlotte.

During my sports years, I played and started/lettered in Football, Baseball and Wrestling. In High School, I had an injury on the field where I broke my lower back and my sports ended quickly. It took over a year to recover and start over. In college, I played intramural baseball and competitive baseball/softball. When I tore my bicep and labrum, my playing days were over for good. I've had numerous injections and surgery to try and repair the damage. That is why my players are NOT allowed to throw a baseball until we warm up. We don't warm up by throwing a baseball. We warm up the entire body to help prevent any injuries. I also teach and talk to them about playing hard and giving it their all, as you don't know when your playing days will end. But it's their game to play, it's just ours to teach them and guide them.

Baseball is a process. It takes time and through repetition, video and homework, we see drastic improvements. I like to say there are 3 phases of lessons; Mechanics, timing and pitch selection-Mental aspect. We focus on all 3 parts!

Why us?

I've coached Little League for over 12 seasons, 5yrs select and worked with kids for over 20 years. We provide training usually reserved for private lessons. We video, analyze and play it back for the kids at least once a month. We want the kids to be the best players they can be, but we understand that not all will be all stars. It's their time to play, let's teach them correctly, coach them and let THEM play. We push and challenge the kids but not to a breaking point. We prepare them for high school baseball. Most kids will never play in college and we believe there is more to learn from baseball than just the next level. We teach young players to become men and respect each other and respect the game! Sometimes coaches forget it's not about us or the parents, it's about the kids.
